Overview | Staff | Our Team
Welcome to Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation at CCMC. The Acute Rehabilitation Service at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center provides technically advanced, comprehensive, family centered care to all age children, and adolescents through age 18. As a full service children’s hospital, we are able to provide an array of children’s support and emergency services not as readily available at traditional Rehabilitation facilities. Our goal is to provide each child with the requisite skills and supports to re-enter the home and school communities and reach his or her full and unique potential. The types of injuries most commonly addressed are brain injuries resulting from accidents, illnesses, or strokes. We also provide rehabilitation for children who have had spinal cord injuries, major surgery or who have serious medical conditions and trauma. Our rehabilitation team is developmentally oriented, and directed by a developmental pediatrician. Core team members include specialists in pediatric rehabilitation from occupational and physical therapy, speech/language pathology, nursing, psychology, special education, child life and nutrition. We consider parents to also be members of our "core team" and we depend on your input and active involvement in the rehabilitation process. Because we are a full service children’s hospital our colleagues from other medical and surgical specialties including physiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and orthopedics, are available on a daily basis. Additional services include the availability of laboratory, X-ray and emergency support 24 hours a day. Prior to admission to the rehabilitation service at CCMC, each child's current medical status and pertinent medical history are reviewed. A CCMC staff member is usually available to visit the referring hospital. This includes meeting with the family to describe our program and discuss what to expect. We encourage families to visit CCMC prior to actual transfer if this is feasible. The Acute Rehabilitation Service is located on a 28 bed child and adolescent unit which provides a full range of inpatient services. All of our rooms are singles to allow space for a child’s familiar items and to enable parents to comfortably room in, if they so choose.
Community re-entry planning and communication with those who cared for the child before the
injury are important priorities from the beginning of the hospital stay. Team communication
is scheduled on a regular basis and is ongoing, in order to keep parents and others fully
informed and a part of the decision-making process. |
