The Ilfeld Splint

The Splint
An Ilfeld Splint has been prescribed to treat your child's hip problem. The following information should help you to properly care for your child and the splint during treatment. It is important that you understand and follow the instructions given in order to effectively maintain the correct hip position.

The Ilfeld Splint itself consists of padded thigh cuffs, a spreader bar with hinges, and a cloth suspensor belt.

General Instructions
The exact number of hours per day the splint is to be worn will be determined by your doctor.

Bathing:
The splint may be removed for bathing. Bathe daily and check for any irritation or breaks in the skin. Notify your doctor or the nurses at the numbers listed below should this occur.

Clothing:
The splint is worn over clothing, which must be wrinkle free under the splint to prevent skin irritation. (One piece stretch sleepers are recommended.) The splint will need to be removed for diaper changes.

Ilfeld Splint Care:
The pads on the llfeld Splint may be changed. Be sure to ask the Orthotics Department for a second pair so that you can wash one pair while using the second pair.

Change pads one at a time because the metal cuffs are not marked right and left.

Wash the pads by hand with cool water and line dry. Machine washing or drying will cause pads to shrink.
