Head Injury
- Your child has had a minor head injury. She/he
should recover without difficulty. However, there are
some things to know and to watch for.
- Over the next day or two, you may notice a black and
blue lump where your child hurt him/herself. This will
turn green and yellow and then go away over the next
week or two. You may place ice in a plastic bag or wet
washcloth and place it on the bruised area to decrease
swelling.
- He/she may also have a mild headache for a day or
two. You may give him/her Tylenol or medication
prescribed by your health care provider for the pain
every four hours, as needed.
- When you get home today, he/she may be allowed to
sleep, but be sure you can wake him/her after an hour or
two. When he/she sleeps tonight, plan on waking him/her
once or twice to be sure he/she is alert.
- Keep him/her on a light diet the day of the injury,
mainly clear fluids.
Call your regular doctor, or return to the Emergency
Department if:
- You can't wake your child from sleep.
- Vomiting becomes more frequent.
- His/her headache is getting worse.
- He/she can't walk normally.
- He/she has blurred or double vision.
- You are concerned about the way your child looks to
you.
- Change in child's behavior (very sleepy, fussy,
confused, not acting normal).
