Specialty Roles:

The developmental pediatrician is concerned with the child's overall development, general medical condition, and the behavioral aspects of feeding. The developmental pediatrician provides clinical oversight to the team and assists with interpretation of findings and recommendations from other medical providers.

The nutritionist focuses on the child's general nutritional intake, dietary needs, growth, and possible food and drug interactions. The nutritionist also serves as a liaison with the gastroenterology department.

The occupational therapist assesses the child's positioning, oral motor, and oral sensory needs. The occupational therapist considers the need for special positioning to enhance the child's ability to feed, as well as the potential usefulness of special utensils (nipples, bottles, spoons, forks, plates, and cups.)

The psychologist is concerned with the child-caretaker dynamics (relationships) surrounding feeding. The psychologist is also available to communicate with other health care providers and mental health professionals.

The speech/language pathologist evaluates oral mechanisms and oral motor abilities, including pharyngeal and upper esophageal coordination for swallowing. When a modified barium swallow (MBS) is ordered, the speech/language pathologist is present to assess the safety of swallowing and to rule out aspiration of food. (Note: the occupational therapist may also participate in the MBS if alternative positioning is being considered to improve swallowing.)
