Child Development Center - Evaluation

Overview | Staff | Evaluation | Consultation/Training Services | Social Skills

The evaluations are designed to develop recommendations for appropriate educational programming as well as home-based intervention. Maximizing the school success of students who face challenges is a primary means of helping children and adolescents reach their potential. Our team of experts is well-versed in educational methodologies for children who are not successful within the traditional academic classroom. Modifications and accommodations coupled with skill-building to enhance successful independent functioning is the goal of the recommendations provided through the evaluation and consultation services.

Single Evaluations:
This service involves meeting with a professional from one of the many specialty areas available in order to assess a specific concern. Diagnostic feedback and recommendations are provided on how best to proceed in terms of treatment and/or further evaluation based on the child’s profile and needs.

Multiple Clinician Evaluations:
The Child Development Center provides comprehensive evaluation for children or adolescents about whom questions have been raised in multiple areas of development. The team of professionals, who evaluate and /or review information, is determined by the targeted areas of concern as delineated through an extensive interview with the parents or guardians.

A collaborative model is used which combines the expertise of the various professionals in order to develop a comprehensive and integrated view of the child. For example, a child who has difficulties with speech and language skills, social skills, concept development, and who exhibits stereotypic behaviors such as hand flapping, might be seen by a team comprised of a developmental psychologist, an educational specialist, a speech and language pathologist, and a developmental pediatrician to formulate a diagnosis and intervention strategies.

Patterns of strengths and weaknesses, as well as recommendations for intervention, are developed using an integrated approach, which considers the individual child as a member of a family, school, and greater community. The team of specialists will vary depending upon the referral questions and the child’s presentation. Findings are presented in a conference format as well as written reports.

Referrals:

Parents, physicians, schools, and other agencies can make referrals directly by contacting the Child Development Center. Most referrals go through our Intake process to obtain comprehensive background and referral information, which is reviewed by the Primary Team. The clinicians confer to determine which evaluations are indicated to answer the referral questions, and assist the family, physician, and/or referring agency in making an informed decision as to how best to proceed.

Some referrals do not require a formal intake. These are usually single clinician evaluations with a specific focus. Such referrals should be made directly to the Manager of the Child Development Center in order to facilitate the referral process.
