More than 150 surgical procedures are performed on newborns, infants and children at Connecticut Children's Medical Center each year. The entire spectrum of congenital cardiac operations are performed including operations for complex single ventricle anatomy, complex neonatal repairs and operations for teenagers and young adults with congenital heart disease. The surgeons at Connecticut Children's specialize in early corrective surgery. Together, Drs. Kopf and Mello have established a combined congenital cardiothoracic program in Connecticut which has linked the departments of cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiology at both Connecticut Children's and Yale New Haven Hospital. Approximately 300 cardiac procedures are performed yearly in Connecticut's combined cardiothoracic surgery program. A coordinated team approach is emphasized with a great deal of attention paid to patient comfort and parent involvement.
