Keeping All Kids Safe In Cars!
In February 2002 the Injury Prevention Center at Connecticut Children's Medical Center was awarded a three year Emergency Medical Services for Children Targeted Issues grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a Model Training Program for Safe Transportation of Children with Special Health Care Needs. Eileen Blake, MPH is the Primary Investigator on the project and has significant experience as a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor. Ms. Blake was also the former Director of the Connecticut SAFE KIDS Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center and during that time identified a need to train rehabilitation therapists on the safest forms of transportation for children with special needs.

The training will launch in Spring of 2004 and be available to Occupational and Physical Therapists who work with children throughout the United States. The training will take advantage of the Internet to provide a multimedia presentation on proper selection and use of child safety seats and wheelchairs for children with special health care needs. The training will not certify the rehab therapists in car seat safety, but will provide them with the basic knowledge they need to provide guidance to families regarding safe travel in passenger vehicles and school buses.

Following implementation the training will be evaluated regarding gained knowledge of users. Any necessary modifications to the training will be made in early 2005 and it is anticipated that the training will be widely available soon after via CD-ROM.

In addition to the training, the program offers support to the community regarding safe transport of children with special health care needs.
