

Martin J. Gavin, President and Chief Executive Officer
Marty Gavin is President & CEO of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. He was appointed by the board of directors on May 11, 2006 after a national search. He had served as interim President and CEO since January 6, 2006.
Gavin was re-appointed to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center board of directors in September 2005 to serve as co-chair of a board oversight committee with Dr. Peter Deckers, Executive Vice President of the University of Connecticut Health Center, and Dean of the School of Medicine. Gavin had previously served as a member of the board of directors of
Connecticut Children's and its predecessor, Newington Children’s Hospital from 1989 to 2000. He was chairman of the board when
Connecticut Children's opened on April 2, 1996, and also served as chair of the Building Committee during the construction of the hospital, and later as chairman of the
Connecticut Children's Medical Center Foundation.
Previously an executive with more than 27 years of experience in the insurance and investment industries, he worked for 16 years at the Phoenix Companies, in Hartford, retiring in 2000. While at the Phoenix, Marty held various positions, including Senior Vice President of Phoenix Home Life, Executive Vice President of its investment subsidiaries, and President of its national trust company.
Prior to joining the Phoenix, he worked at CNA Insurance Companies, Chicago, Illinois, as head of its pension and institutional asset management division. Marty began his career at CIGNA (formerly Connecticut General) where he held a series of management positions in the marketing and client service divisions of CIGNA’s Group Pension operations.
Active in the community, Marty has served on the boards of directors of the Child Health and Development Institute, the Children’s Fund of Connecticut (Chair), the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (Chair), the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation (Chair), the Connecticut Health System, the Greater Hartford YMCA, and Saint Joseph College. In addition, he has been appointed to several advisory committees to assist state and local governments and not-for-profit institutions. Marty is a corporator of both Hartford Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. For 12 years he served as a volunteer coach in youth sports leagues in Connecticut and Illinois.
Marty is a 1972 graduate of the University of Connecticut and a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum.
Marty has been married for 33 years to Kathy Gavin, an Associate Professor in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. The Gavins have two married children, one grandchild and live in Avon.
Wendy E. Warring, Senior Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer
Wendy E. Warring, JD, is senior vice president and chief operating officer at
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. In addition to directing Connecticut
Children’s day-to-day activities, Ms. Warring is responsible for all strategic
planning initiatives and quality improvement activities at the Medical Center
and its multiple locations throughout the region.
Before joining Connecticut Children’s, Ms. Warring was an executive vice
president at UMass Memorial Health Care Inc, the second largest healthcare
system in Massachusetts. Prior to that, Ms. Warring served the state in
a leadership role as Massachusetts’ commissioner of the Division of Medical
Assistance where she directed the state’s Medicaid program.
Ms. Warring has also held a variety of legal roles, including general
counsel for the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency, deputy legal counsel
for the Governor of Massachusetts and trial attorney on the New England
Bank Fraud Task Force for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Ms. Warring earned her law degree at the Yale University Law School
and received her bachelor’s degree from Brown University.
Gerald Boisvert, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Gerald Boisvert is
Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Connecticut
Children's Medical Center, a position
he has held since 1997. Prior to joining the Medical Center, Mr. Boisvert held the same
position at US HomeCare Corporation from 1996 to 1997. He was employed by the Windham
Community Memorial Hospital in Willimantic, Connecticut, as Senior Vice President of
Finance from 1992 to 1996. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from
Boston University School of Management. Mr. Boisvert is a Certified Public Accountant
who previously served as a Senior Manager in the Hartford office of Ernst & Whinney.
He is currently President of the Southside Institution Neighborhood Alliance (SINA) and
Chairman of the Learning Corridor Corporation.
Paul H. Dworkin, M.D., Physician-in-Chief
Dr. Dworkin is Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Hartford, Connecticut. He also serves as Director and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Dworkin received his A.B. from Rutgers University and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine. He completed a pediatric residency and subsequently completed
a fellowship in Ambulatory Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Boston, with a special
emphasis on developmental and behavioral issues.
Dr. Dworkin was the 2003 recipient of the C. Anderson Aldrich Award, given by the American
Academy of Pediatric's Developmental Pediatrics section. Past winners of this award for
work in childhood development include Dr. Benjamin Spock and Dr. T. Berry Brazelton. Dr. Dworkin is a member of numerous
professional societies including the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, the American Academy
of Pediatrics, and the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. He was the
Editor of the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics from 1997 to 2002.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of numerous organizations, including the Child
Health and Development Institute of Connecticut, the Children's Fund of Connecticut, the
Children's Trust Fund, and the Women and Children's Health Network.
Robert Englander, MD, MPH, Vice President,
Quality and Patient Safety
Robert Englander, MD, MPH,
is vice president for Quality and Patient Safety at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
In this position that Dr. Englander provides operational, administrative, and strategic leadership for the
medical center’s quality and performance improvement, patient safety, peer review, and medical staff
credentialing activities.
Dr. Englander came to Connecticut Children’s in 2002 from the Divisions of Pediatric Care and
Pediatric Education at the University of Maryland Medical System. Since then he has effectively
led the development of the medical center’s hospitalist service and strengthened inpatient
services through multidisciplinary collaboration as the director of the Inpatient Management Team
and head of the Division of Hospitalist Care. He also led the design and implementation of
competencies for postgraduate medical education as associate director of the Pediatric Residency Program.
Dr. Englander received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Yale University where he also received his
medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine. He earned a master’s degree of public health in epidemiology
from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Dr. Englander completed his pediatric residency at
Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and completed his fellowship in pediatric and
neonatal critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
He is board-certified in pediatrics with a subspecialty in critical care and he is an associate
professor of pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
Fernando A. Ferrer, M.D., Surgeon-in-Chief
Dr. Ferrer is currently the
Surgeon-in-Chief, Co-Chair of the
Faculty Practice Plan, and the Director of the Department of Pediatric Urology. He is an Associate Professor of Urologic Surgery
& Oncology at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, CT.
A native of Passaic, NJ, Dr. Ferrer received his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
He went on to serve in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant and medical diving officer. He completed his urologic
surgery residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and his fellowship at the Johns Hopkins
Hospital where he was an instructor of urology.
Dr. Ferrer is active in cancer research and gene therapy. He has published over 40 articles and numerous book chapters.
Theresa Hendricksen, RN, MS, Vice President, Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Officer
Theresa Hendricksen, RN, MS, is vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer
at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
Hendricksen was previously director of medical surgical nursing and materials management.
She is responsible for leadership for all nursing services and supervision of ancillary clinical
services, such as pharmacy, radiology, nutrition and family support.
Hendricksen received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire,
and a master’s degree in health care management from the University of Connecticut. She has
been with Connecticut Children’s since its opening in 1996 coming from Hartford Hospital
where she was a nurse manager since 1990.
She was part of the Operations Redesign Team from 1997-1998, which restructured and implemented new ideas for expansion and development in all departments of the hospital. Some of her accomplishments included expanding bed capacity and other services for the children at the hospital. During her time as nurse manager, the hospital achieved overall Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction scores at 95th percentile, and nursing scores at 99th percentile for six consecutive quarters.
Hendricksen resides in Colchester, Connecticut with her husband and three children. She was born and raised in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Betsy Rudden, Vice President, Human Resources
Betsy Rudden, is Vice President, Human Resources at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. She is responsible for all aspects of HR to include organizational development, succession planning, change facilitation, compensation and benefits. She came to
Connecticut Children's after a 23-year career at the Phoenix Companies were she most recently served as Vice President, Center for Transformation and Growth. In this role she worked closely with senior management to guide them through developing and implementing comprehensive Lean training and business process events to meet the ever-changing needs of the business. Prior to this she held the position of Vice President, Human Resources. At Phoenix Investment Partners, a subsidiary, she was Vice President, Human Resources and Vice President, Field and Investor Services. Her background also includes significant experience in executive coaching. Ms Rudden is a graduate of Becker College, Worcester, MA. She is on the Board of Directors of the American School for the Deaf where she chairs the Institutional Advancement Committee and serves on the Executive and Personnel Affairs committees. She is a lifetime resident of Connecticut and currently lives in Farmington.
Martha E. Schall, Vice President,
Connecticut Children's Medical Center Foundation Inc.
Martha Schall is vice president of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation. Schall was previously associate vice president and director of Medical Development at Yale University. She brings more than 20 years of fundraising experience to
Connecticut Children's including her past service at Yale as managing director of the Yale Alumni Fund and university director of Individual Giving. Schall also was involved in the management and frontline fundraising during a $1.7 billion capital campaign for the university. She said her interest in wanting to lead
Connecticut Children's' fundraising efforts stems from the care her son received as a patient at the medical center.
Schall received her bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University and a master’s degree in finance and management from New York University’s Stern School of Business. She is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Council for the Advancement and Support of Secondary Education, and the Group on Institutional Advancement for the American Association of Medical Colleges.
Ann Taylor, General Counsel
Ann
Taylor is General Counsel at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. She is
responsible for legal affairs, government relations, corporate compliance and
risk management. Formerly Vice President and Government Affairs Counsel at
Fleet Bank, Taylor also represented credit unions and the American Banker’s
Association on Capitol Hill. The opportunity to advocate for children attracted
her to Connecticut Children's.
A graduate of Catholic University and
Western New England School of Law, Taylor serves on the
board of the Children’s Fund of CT and is a past chair of
the Foodshare Board. An appointee to the Fleet Community
Oversight Committee, the state Ethics Commission and the
Judicial Review Council, Taylor currently sits on the
Connecticut Hospital Association Committee on Government and
the state Criminal Justice Commission. |
