At CCMC we advance treatment for cancer through both clinical trials and laboratory research. Clinical trials are studies conducted with patients to evaluate the promise of emerging cancer therapies as well as innovative approaches to combinations of existing therapies. Many children with cancer have been cured with combinations of new drugs developed through clinical trials. The Division of Hematology/Oncology is a key member of the Children’s Oncology Group, an international consortium that seeks to cure or prevent childhood cancers through scientific discovery. This relationship helps Connecticut Children’s to offer patients the very latest innovations in clinical therapy, while simultaneously helping to advance clinical cancer research of benefit to patients everywhere. The faculty and staff of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center believe that every person with cancer deserves to have access to the finest and most cutting-edge therapy available. We are pleased to announce that we will be expanding this effort and opening new trials in 2008 for adolescents and young adults with sarcomas. The mission of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) is “to cure and prevent childhood and adolescent cancer through scientific discovery and compassionate care.” As a full member of the COG we are committed to this mission. We understand that the progress in survival for children with cancer over the past 30 years has, in large part, been due to the participation in clinical trials. Therefore, we believe that in order to provide the best care for our patients we need to provide the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. As a result of this commitment, we currently have over 40 clinical trials available for enrollment. Please contact a staff member in the Hematology/Oncology Department for questions related to COG or visit www.curesearch.org. |
