Overview | Driver Safety Links | New Teen Driver Keeping Teen Drivers Safe The leading cause of death and disability among teenagers is Motor vehicle crashes. Nationwide, over 5,000 teens die each year as a result of motor vehicle crashes. Many more are injured or disabled. Statistics show that recently licensed teen drivers are 4 to 8 times more likely to crash than adult drivers. These alarmingly high numbers are the result of driving inexperience and risk-taking behaviors. Teen motor vehicle crashes are preventable. Driving at night, driving with teen passengers, and driving after drinking alcohol are a few of the key factors that increase a teen's crash risk.
