About Us The Injury Problem Injuries kill and disable more children in America today than all other causes of death combined. Although the circumstances range from unintentional injuries such as motor vehicle crashes to peer violence and suicide, all childhood injuries share two characteristics. The first is that injuries are predictable and therefore preventable. The second is that despite easy availability, measures to prevent most childhood injuries are too often not used. The IPC is working to dispel the myth that nothing can be done to prevent "accidents" and violence, as well as implementing effective strategies to prevent them. All childhood deaths are tragedies since they prevent their victims from ever growing up to raise families of their own and make their unique contribution to society. Mission The mission of the Injury Prevention Center (IPC) is to conduct scientific research into the causes and effects of injuries, and apply that knowledge to develop practical programs and policies on injury prevention in the community. Goal Our goal is to diminish the impact of trauma on Connecticut's children and families and to broaden the effectiveness of the states injury prevention programs and policies. Theme The central theme that ties IPC's activities together is a commitment to translate data into prevention programs and policy. History Established in 1990 as a collaboration between Hartford Hospital, the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and the Connecticut chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the IPC was Connecticut's first injury prevention center and is one of the few in the nation that is exclusively devoted to injury reduction among children and youth. In 1994, Newington Children's Hospital joined the IPC, contributing its state and regional child advocacy expertise and leadership. Today, this collaborative program is a key part of the Connecticut Children's Medical Center (CCMC), combining the IPCs nationally recognized leadership in childrens injury control with the research and childrens health expertise of an academic children's hospital. |
